What We Fact-Check
Karuppu News fact-checks claims that are likely to mislead the public, particularly:
- Statements made by politicians, government officials, and public figures in Tamil Nadu
- Government statistics and data cited in policy announcements
- Viral social media claims about Tamil Nadu governance, courts, and public health
- RTI responses that contradict official government statements
- Claims about court orders, judgments, and legal proceedings
Our Verification Sources
We rely on primary and official sources for fact-checking:
- Government orders (GOs), circulars, and official press releases from Tamil Nadu government
- Madras High Court and Supreme Court case records and judgment texts
- RTI responses received from government departments
- Official statistical publications from Census India, CMIE, and Tamil Nadu Statistical Handbook
- Parliamentary records from Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha official websites
- Peer-reviewed research and reports from established research institutions
- Expert opinions from domain specialists (legal, medical, economic) disclosed with their credentials
Fact-Check Process
- Identification: A claim is identified as requiring verification by our editorial team or a reporter.
- Source research: We locate the original source of the claim and at least two independent corroborating or refuting sources.
- Contact: Where possible, we contact the person who made the claim for clarification.
- Assessment: Our editor assesses the evidence and assigns a verdict.
- Review: Fact-checks are reviewed by a second editor before publication.
- Publication: The fact-check is published with full source links and methodology disclosed.
Verdict Scale
Timeline
We aim to complete and publish fact-checks within 24–72 hours of a claim being identified. Breaking or rapidly evolving stories may be fact-checked with interim updates as more information becomes available.
Independence
Our fact-checks are conducted independently of any political, commercial, or governmental influence. No fact-check verdict is subject to approval or review by any external party before publication.
Corrections to Fact-Checks
If we have made an error in a fact-check, we will correct it promptly and prominently, in accordance with our Corrections Policy. To report an error in a fact-check, contact corrections@karuppu.in.
